Electronic Invasion Countermeasures
Provided by Allen Cowling
Electronic invasion equipment is frequently used to
gather information, especially in domestic or divorce cases, or to learn business secrets. There is an
art to identifying and locating this equipment, be it a wiretap, a telephone tap or an RF transmitter,
that consists of not only detection monitors, but visual searches as well.
Although the use of this eavesdropping equipment is
illegal, it is used frequently and as a result, we have been retained on numerous occasions to
"sweep" homes, businesses and vehicles. The equipment we use is as follows;
-
The Telephone Analyzer 300 and Sequencing
Logic. The unit is connected inside of the telephone and identifies a "Hot Wired"
phone. This simply means that someone, after converting a telephone ear piece into an open
microphone, has attached a vacant cable pair to the ear piece and is using this method to listen to
conversations taking place in the area the telephone is located.
-
The Mark II Bug Catcher. This device enables
us to determine if a tape recorder, wiretap, has been attached to either a single or a multi
telephone line.
-
The Spectrum Monitor 401. This device is a
frequency searcher that is used to identify and locate wireless transmitters, more commonly
referred to as "Bugs." The unit is also used to detect the presence of an automobile
transmitter. While there are numerous units on the market that claim to detect transmitters, some
that can be purchased for as little as $100.00, the cost of this unit alone was
$5,200.00.
In addition to purchasing and using the best equipment
available, in 1977, we went through extensive training at the Dektor Counter Intelligence facility
located in Alexandria, Virginia. Anyone can claim they have the ability to "de-bug." and the
equipment to do it with. Very few do.
